Artwork > Raw to Processed Series

The Raw to Processed series considers food and its relationship to our health. Historically, plants and food were used to treat illness, as illustrated in ancient herbals. Much of the recent dialogue on food centers on eating processed foods and their role in developing disease in the human body.

I examine the structure of food with the aid of a scanning electron microscope. The ink drawings investigate the relationship between the elements of raw food (left panel) to a processed counterpart (right panel). I contemplated the public health and ecological costs of the industrialized food industry as I amassed marks, symbolically weaving or stitching individual threads, to create their topographical landscapes.
